Sunnyvale: A City of Arts

Sunnyvale is home to a number of artistic endeavors, from the multimedia production of Cogswell Polytechnic College to the Art Institute campus. Best of all, you don't have to be enrolled in an art program to enjoy the artistic spirit of Sunnyvale. With more than 100 pieces of public art around the city, there's always a surprise around the corner.

If you're looking for a more organized cultural experience, it starts at the Sunnyvale Theatre. Located just off of El Camino Real, this 200-seat theatre features a constantly updated calendar of events. Its resident performers include the California Theatre Center, the Sunnyvale Community Players, and the Sunnyvale Singers.

The California Theatre Center is a unique theatre company that focuses on productions for younger audiences. With an ensemble of two dozen actors and a dedicated staff, California Theatre Center productions feature fairy tales, children's literature, and historical stories. In addition, California Theatre Center offers an annual summer season of plays for adult audiences.

Sunnyvale Community Players is an award-winning community theater group with more than 40 years of history. Featuring a wide range of productions, Sunnyvale Community Players caters to young and old, and offers performing and production opportunities to people with all levels of experience

Sunnyvale Singers is a community chorus with two major concerts each year at the Sunnyvale Community Theatre. You'll also find the Singers at other venues around the area. Performing a range of both classical and contemporary choral music, the Sunnyvale Singers provide the community with a great opportunity to indulge in the finer aspects of classical music.

What are the other arts supported by Sunnyvale, you may ask. The annual Sunnyvale Art & Wine festival takes place every summer with around 500 of both vendors and presenters of arts, crafts, food, and wine. With live music, family activities, and something to satisfy the appetite of even the pickiest eater, the Sunnyvale Art & Wine Festival is an event locals and visitors enjoy every year.

For a more casual event you can catch some improvised melodies in Sunnyvale. On the third Sunday of every month, bluegrass musicians gather outside of the Heritage Park Building for an afternoon jam session. Newcomers are welcome, but be sure to bring your own instruments – and no amps or electric instruments; after all, this is bluegrass we’re talking about here in its best and natural form.

If you don’t want feel like jamming or acting, you can appreciate art at the Sunnyvale Art Gallery. A local operation, Sunnyvale Art Gallery features a wide range of activities, from local artist showcases and exhibits to classes and open mics, even a café and art supply store.

Whether you’ve got the acting bug, need to paint the picture in your mind, or want to find like-minded musicians, there’s always a place to participate and celebrate the arts in Sunnyvale. Keep an eye on our blog for news about upcoming events, as we’ll bring you the latest and greatest happenings in the arts in Sunnyvale and other local communities.
