Finding Things to Do in Sunnyvale, California

Sunnyvale is at the southern corner of the San Francisco Bay Area and the center of Silicon Valley. Residents in the city of Sunnyvale have many choices of things to do including, golf, visiting wineries, festivals, dining, biking, hiking, arts and culture, nightlife and much more. The city is near the Santa Cruz Mountains and less than an hour from the Pacific coast, making it easy to enjoy both mountains and the ocean. There are many family-friendly activities and internationally known sites for visitors to visit while they are in the area.

Golf 

 

If you are a golfer, the City of Sunnyvale offers 27 challenging holes on two courses.

Sunnyvale Golf Course

Sunnyvale Golf Course is a par 70 regulation 18-hole course with numerous bunkers, dog legs and water holes. The manicured course tests players' skills stretching out to 6,255 yards.

 

Sunken Gardens Golf Course

Sunken Gardens Golf Course is a 9-hole, 1,502 yard executive course. Sunken Gardens is ideal for the beginner golfer with ample practice facilities and shorter length holes.

The driving range is open 364 days a year from 7 a.m. - 9 p.m.
(Wednesday’s closings are at 7 p.m. and Thursday’s openings are at 9:30 a.m.). 18 range stalls are available to the public for practice, warm-up before play, or for exercise/therapy. Golf clubs, if needed, are available at no extra charge. Please note that the range is well lit for evening practice.

You must reserve a spot seven days in advance on weekdays. On weekends and holidays, Sunnyvale residents can reserve play beginning Monday prior to the weekend/ holiday in person from 6 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. All golfers may place phone reservations beginning 6:30 a.m. on that same Monday

 

 

 

Golfing for Kids 

Children, aged 16 and under, can play free of charge when accompanied by a paying or monthly adult club member (one no charge junior per adult only). Players can use both courses, 7 days per week, with no time restrictions. This discount program only applies to green fees.

Dining at the golf Course

The Lookout Inn at Sunnyvale Golf Course and The Clubhouse Restaurant at Sunken Gardens Golf Course is a lovely casual restaurant for dining, catering events and parties.  
 

Community events calendar

Plan your time in Sunnyvale if you are visiting because there is so much you can do. The city’s many community events will give you many ideas for enjoyable activities during your day and fun outings with your family.

Farmers Market

Sunnyvale Farmers’ Market is located in Downtown Sunnyvale at Murphy Avenue and Washington on Saturdays from 9 a.m.  to 1 p.m. all year round. Choose your meal from fresh fruits and vegetables, gourmet cheeses, breads and other gourmet food items, including farm-fresh produce.

Historical sites

Sunnyvale Historical Museum

This free, local-history museum is the place for you if you love exploring the past and learning more about Silicon Valley. There are numerous exhibits about Sunnyvale's rich technological, canning and agricultural past.

Location: Murphy Park, California and Sunnyvale Avenues, Sunnyvale; Tuesday, Thursday-3 p.m., Sunday 1-4 p.m., or by appointment. For appointment or information, call the Sunnyvale Historical Society at 408-749-0220

Orchard Heritage Park Interpretive Exhibit
This agricultural history museum features Sunnyvale’s roots in farming. On exhibit is farm equipment of all kinds and sizes. You can take a self-guided tour of this outdoor facility.

Location: Sunnyvale Community Center, 550 E. Remington Drive., Sunnyvale. Open all daylight hours. For information, call the Sunnyvale Historical Society at 408-749-0220.
 

Concerts in the Park

There’s no better way to spend an afternoon in the sun. Sway to the sounds of the Serenaders' big-band '40s and '50s music.

Location: Ortega Park Gazebo, 636 Harrow Way, Sunnyvale. Sunday (August 10, September 14) 1:30-3:30 p.m.; 650-366-3305
 

Eichler Homes 
If living in the outdoors from the indoors in Eichler homes fascinate you, you’ll find the first Eichler homes ever built in Sunnyvale. The first home designed by Joseph Eichler, Manor I was completed in 1949. Eichler homes have a clean-lined concept and usually employ a lot of glass, a flat roof and a central outdoor atrium, creating a simple and open living space. There are still many Eichler homes in Sunnyvale and you can drive by them. Most of the Eichlers are located around the Wolfe Road and Fremont Avenue area in southeast Sunnyvale.

Lace Is More

The delicate and classic beauty of lace through the ages can be seen at the museum. Admission is free.

Carmelite Monastery

 

The Carmelite Monastery was founded in 1908 to provide a place for solace and spirituality in Northern California. The monastery is a prime example of Spanish-ecclesiastical architecture. Peaceful shaded walkways with benches around the property and a beautiful, serene garden is a perfect environment for quiet meditation. The Carmelite Nuns hold a daily Mass at 7:15 a.m. and Sunday Mass at 10:30 a.m. The monastery and garden are located east of Santa Clara University, west of Steve Carls Park.

Sunnyvale Community Center Fountain

Enjoy the sounds of cascading water and the scene around you at the Sunnyvale Community Center fountain. While not the most quiet spot because of the ducks milling around the fountain, you’ll find it a nice spot to relax and watch your surroundings.

Location: 550 E. Remington Drive., Sunnyvale
 

Skating

Sunnyvale Skatepark
Skaters of all levels of expertise are welcome here. The 18,500-square-foot skatepark is free to the public but is unsupervised. There are bunny slopes of skate dishes for beginners and a 9-foot vertical drop from wall top to bottom of deep bowl for experts. The skatepark has two bowl sections and a street-skate perimeter. Helmets must be worn.

Shoreline at Mountain View

Listen to your favorite band play at the popular Shoreline Amphitheater. There’s lawn seating in addition to seats in the arena.
