The Flamenco Society of San José in San Jose |
|
Founded by Anita Sheer in 1985, we are in our 23th year of operation and continue to bring to the greater San Francisco Bay Area the best in Cante, Baile and Toque.
The education aspect of the Society is carried out by the Academy. Baile (dance) and Toque (guitar) classes are taught on a weekly basis at the Hoover Community Center, 1677 Park Avenue, San José and at Roundhill Dance Studio, 3428 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, California. The faculty includes Daniel Torres (Toque), Koko de la Isla, and Rubina Valenzuela (Baile)
The Society also does presentations at public and private schools to introduce the youth of our community to the culture and music of Andalucia, Spain.
Our juergas (flamenco jam sessions) are showcases for established flamenco artists and for the students of the Flamenco Society Academy.
Juergas are presented at the Historic Hoover Theater in San José on the third Saturday of every other month. The shows start at 7:00 PM and usually last until 10:00 PM. The price of admission is $14.00 for the general public and $12.00 for students and seniors.
The Society presents formal shows starring our own professional cuadro known as Flamenco Olé and national and international flamencos. In the past we have presented Sabicas, Carlos Montoya, Juan Serrano, José Greco, Los Romeros, Luisillo, Cañizares, Vicente Amigo, Gerardo Nuñez, La Tania, Yaelisa, José Galvan, Lara y Reyes, Pepa Montés y Ricardo Miño, José Manuel Roldán, Andrés Marín, David Serva and Strunz and Farah. For a complete list of the artists we have presented in the past, see the "Past Performances" section. |
