A renovation five years in the making is in the final phase at Homestead Square, and patrons are already enjoying new additions to the shopping center.

The renovation of the center, located at Homestead Road and De Anza Boulevard, is its first in 40 years.

When the makeover was pitched to Cupertino’s elected officials, developers from Sobrato Organization planned to knock down more than 95,000 square feet of space to build 147,709 square feet for its tenants, including four new commercial satellite buildings and three new major tenant spaces.

Safeway, Rite Aid and Michaels Arts & Crafts were completed in the first phase, and now Stein Mart, Ross, Ulta and FedEx Office are open. As part of the grand opening on March 7, the new Ross Dress for Less store donated $2,500 to the Cupertino High School Band Boosters.

Chase Bank will also join the center, and Great Clips will return.

Safeway anchors the middle of the shopping center, which opened May of last year. The former T.J. Maxx at the center moved into the old Mervyn’s building at the Cupertino Crossroads Shopping Center in spring 2012.

Most of the center’s tenants are performing above projections in terms of sales, said John Machado, executive vice president at Colliers International, who is handling leasing for Sobrato.

“From the ownership perspective, we are very pleased with the new tenancy in the center,” Machado said.

Leases for tenants including Fish’s Wild, Chipotle and Starbucks are final, Machado added; it’s just a matter of each starting construction. He anticipates the stores opening by the end of June or July.

“The others are very close to finalizing,” Machado said of the remaining vacancies.

Homestead Square is located at 20580 Homestead Road at De Anza Boulevard.
