Jade Harrison of Cupertino, Elena Kamas of Homestead and Kelly Bishop of Monta Vista are in the running to finish anong the Central Coast Section’s elite this spring–at least if the way they ran at the CCS Top 8 Track and Field Classic last Friday night at San Jose City College is any indication.

Cupertino’s Harrison raced to a win in the 200-meter dash in 24.63, Kamas took the 1,600 in 4:58.58 and Bishop was tops in the 800 in 2:18.35 to lead the cast of local finishers at the rugged meet.

The Cupertino girls tied Menlo-Atherton for ninth place in the 35-team field behind Harrison’s winning performance in the 200, where she edged out Santa Catalina’s Mikayla Revera (second in 24.90). The Cupertino junior also added a fourth in the 400 with a 56.73 clocking.

Also contributing to the Pioneers’ strong showing was freshman Caroline Gee, who came in fourth in the 1,600 (5:01.20), a race won by Kamas.

Kamas, a Homestead freshman, added a fourth in the 800 (2:19.87) to pace the Mustangs to a 13th-place finish in the team standings.

Monta Vista ended up in 18th place, thanks to Bishop’s first-place finish in the 800, where she barely held off San Benito’s Marisa Villegas, who was right behind her at 2:18.37.

Fremont’s Sabina Dayal was fourth in the long jump (16-4.5) with teammate Annah Jones eighth in the 100 (12.66).

Other locals turning in outstanding efforts included Lynbrook’s Esther Ho, who was eighth in the 100 hurdles (16.26), and Homestead’s Miranda Zinola, who was eighth in the discus (110-2.5).

Boys varsity

The Lynbrook boys turned in a solid effort in the varsity division, tying for 19th with Wilcox, largely on the strength of an outstanding effort by Justin Robison.

Robison, who last year set meet records in the frosh-soph division in both the 1,600 and 3,200, took second in the 3,200 in 9:22.29, following Lincoln’s Jose Pina (9:15.55) across the finish line.

Lynbrook’s 4×400 relay team came in ninth in 3:34.13, just behind the team from King’s Academy (3:34.05), while Andy Shen and Jim Sussenguth came in 14th and 16th, respectively, for the Vikes in the 800.

The Knights received a seventh-place performance from Derek Friske in the 400 (51.63), and in the same race Cupertino’s Spencer Mills finished 11th (52.09). King’s Academy’s Boaz Chum added a 13th in the long jump (19-3).

Fremont junior Saul Scher came in 14th in the shot put with a mark of 39-6.5.

Boys frosh-soph

If last week’s showing at the Top 8 is any indicator, the future looks bright for the boys program at Lynbrook.

Competing against some of the best young talent in the CCS, the Viking frosh-soph team finished a strong fourth with 32 points, just four points behind second-place Mt. Pleasant. Bellarmine Prep ran away with the team title in the frosh-soph division by compiling 104 points, and also captured the boys varsity championship.

Freshman Andrew Shao was the driving force behind Lynbrook’s impressive frosh-soph showing, garnering a second and a third in the hurdles.

The Vikings also received second-place performances from Kevin Huang in the long jump and Brandon To in the shot put.
