Monta Vista scored four goals in each of the first and third periods and held on for a 10-7 girls water polo victory over Wilcox on Sept. 18.

It was a bounce-back win for the Matadors, who finished the first week of play in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with a 1-1 split. Two days earlier they lost at home to Santa Clara 14-10.

Senior Gayatri Ketavarapu scored three goals, junior Monica Ravichandran and senior Samantha Quevedo tallied two and senior Scarlett Perry had one in the road win at Wilcox.

Fremont opened the season 2-0 with wins over Cupertino 17-8 and Harker 9-6.

Carmen Steinmeier’s seven goals led the way for Fremont at Cupertino. Priya Lee scored four and Mina Loldj added three in the win for the Firebirds, who improved to 3-2 overall with the two victories.

In De Anza play, Homestead fell to Los Altos 9-3 and Palo Alto 14-6. Petra Boester scored three to lead the Mustangs against Paly.

Tennis

Monta Vista improved to 3-0 in the SCVAL De Anza Division with wins over Gunn 7-0 and Lynbrook 6-1.

The Matadors swept each of the four singles and three doubles matches against Gunn in straight sets. With usual No. 1 player Aiswarya Sankar not in the line-up, fellow senior Nicole Stomakhin moved into the top singles spot and responded by not losing a game.

Sophomore Laura Cao also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Freshman Rashmi Ghonasgi won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 and sophomore Aruishi Rai was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 4.

In doubles, sophomore Kelly Kim and freshman Carol Lei combined for a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1, juniors Sophia Cao and Miharu Koh won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 and junior Lori Chang and senior Katherine Guo claimed the No. 3 match 6-0, 6-4.

Monta Vista and Saratoga were to tangle on the Matadors’ courts Sept. 25 in the first of two regular season league matches.

Homestead dropped a tight match to Los Gatos 4-3 on Sept. 16, despite a strong 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles by Stephanie Lok.

Golf

Homestead’s Maddie Thorpe earned medalist honors in a pair of team defeats against Saratoga and Monta Vista.

Thorpe fired a 39 in the 241-263 defeat to Saratoga and a 41 in the Mustangs’ one-stroke defeat to the Matadors, 247-248, at Sunnyvale Municipal on Sept. 18.

Other lady Mustang golfers include Elizabeth Cook, Hannah Goh, Brooke Schryver, Thalia Tran, Maggie Matzinger and Noa Yakir.
