Dairy Belle, which closed in 2014 after a 57-year run in Sunnyvale, will be replaced by a new eatery with a very different vision.

Instead of serving up chili fries and milkshakes, the new owner plans to offer fresh, organic fare at its Stop Cafe restaurant.

No opening date has been set for the new eatery at 1323 Sunnyvale Saratoga Road, but work is well under way.

Dairy Belle was a popular hangout for students and faculty from nearby Fremont High School as well as employees at the Fremont Union High School District main offices. It closed in November when the owner decided to retire.

The building’s new owner, who declined to give his name, said Stop Cafe plans to use fresh, organic ingredients in its dishes and to bake all its bread on site. Breakfast will be offered throughout the day, he added.

He also said there will be some “unique dishes” with competitive prices. The cafe will become a place people like to go for a small bite rather than a big meal, he added.

At a recent planning commission meeting, staff said plans show that the building will be completely redesigned from the floor up and its outer bricks repainted, the parking area will be ripped up and repaved, and a 537-foot canopy will be added above the existing outdoor eating area.

There also is talk of adding planters and landscaping around the location, as well as a bicycle parking area.
