The tot lot at Ortega Park will be closed for several months for repairs.

On July 23, a woman accidentally drove her car into the tot lot from the parking lot after mistakenly thinking she had put her car into park.

“Our public safety officers confirmed there were no drugs or alcohol involved and very fortunately there were no injuries,” Sunnyvale communications officer Jennifer Garnett said. “The driver was determined to be at fault, but she was not cited because the collision did not occur on a public roadway.”

Her insurance company, however, has accepted liability for the claim and the city will be invoicing the company for the repairs.

Currently, the city is reviewing bids for the new play equipment and determining costs for the other repairs, so there is no estimated total cost yet. Repairs will likely take several months.

In addition to replacing the play equipment and repairing the fence, the city will be installing a concrete barrier called a seat wall between the sidewalk and the planter as an additional safety element.

“Ortega Park has been open for 45 years, and this is the only time someone has driven into a play area,” Garnett added.
