SUNNYVALE — Authorities have identified three police officers who shot and killed a man who reportedly charged at them with a knife in a confrontation at a Sunnyvale apartment complex last week.

Moises Nerio, 42, died Nov. 12 at the Palms Villa Apartments on Ayala Drive after a confrontation with officers from the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety. The officers were summoned just after noon that day for reports that Nerio had sexually assaulted a female relative.

Soon after arriving, police say the officers were confronted by Nerio, who was holding a knife, and that they fired at close range when Nerio charged at them. Nerio was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The officers who fired their weapons are Lt. Daniel Pistor, an 18-year police veteran; Officer Sean Mula, who has 18 months of police experience; and Officer Barron Renzi, who has been on the force for a year.

All three officers were placed on paid administrative leave. Sunnyvale police launched an investigation in conjunction with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, which is routine after officer-involved shootings in the county.

The officers are expected to return to duty next week.
