Interested in hearing about Sunnyvale’s biggest accomplishments in the past year?

The annual Sunnyvale State of the City event will be held at the city’s newest park, Seven Seas Park, on Sept. 13.

Jim Griffith will give his first state of the city address as mayor and after the address, the annual Community Awards will be given out, recognizing local residents for their achievements.

Awards will be given to a distinguished resident, outstanding high school senior, outstanding community volunteer, outstanding educator, outstanding businessperson, outstanding contribution to the arts and outstanding environmental achievement.

The mayor’s award of excellence will also be announced, which by tradition the winner is not named until the ceremony.

Last year’s winners included Ed Walzer as outstanding community volunteer; Alan Moo for outstanding contribution to the arts; Shanam Saini as outstanding businessperson of the year; Michelle Edgecumbe as outstanding educator; Safe Routes to School site coordinators for outstanding environmental achievement; Denzel Campos as outstanding high school senior; and former mayor Patricia Castillo for distinguished resident of the year.

The mayor’s award of excellence was given to Don Eagleston of the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce.

Participants can enjoy live music from the Magnolia Jazz Band at the event and food trucks will also be on-site for hungry families.

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Seven Seas Park, 1010 Morse Ave.

Event parking will be available at New Hope International Church, 521 E. Weddell Ave. Public transportation is also encouraged. N. Fair Oaks Avenue is served by VTA Bus 26.
