SYNC plans newspaper winter camp

Students from St. Francis and Homestead high schools have joined forces to host a free newspaper camp during winter break this year.

The group hosted its first summer program in July featuring speakers from the Mercury News who talked to students about their roles in the industry.

On Sept. 27, the Sunnyvale Youth Newspaper Camp will be hosting a SYNC Fall Fair at the Sunnyvale Public Library, 665 W. Olive Ave., to open its curriculum to a broader audience and seek student/parent suggestions for a winter camp.

The previous camp focused on teaching students entering grades 5-8 to experiment with different styles of newspaper writing and apply those skills when publishing their school newspapers. Organizers introduced interviewing, investigative reporting, editorial writing, cartooning and formatting. The camp also highlighted different news sources available in the community.

Further information about the fair can be found at facebook.com/sunnyvaleyouthnewspapercamp.
