Swimming and Aquatics in Sunnyvale

The City of Sunnyvale runs a total of five pools in which a variety of aquatics classes at are offered during the spring, summer and fall months. These classes include swimming lessons for youth and adults of all ages, water aerobics classes, beginning water polo, and various American Red Cross courses such as Lifeguard Training, Water Safety Instructor, and Guardstart (a junior lifeguard program). All pools are heated, and are maintained at a temperature between 78 and 82 degrees F.

Registration Information:

• Spring course registration occurs in early February of each year, and fall registration begins in August.

• Registration for spring and fall sessions occur either online, by phone, by fax, or in person at the Sunnyvale Community Center.

• Summer course registration begins in March of each year; registration for summer aquatics programs is accepted via phone, fax, online and in person at the Community Center until a week prior to the start date of the first summer session.

• Once summer lessons have started, registration for summer programs is only available at the pool where the class is being held.

When Sunnyvale’s five neighborhood pools close for the winter season, aquatics activities can be continued at the Fremont High School Pool, located at 1279 Sunnyvale-Saratoga Rd. The City contracts with California Sports Center to operate this swim complex. Fremont High School Pool is open year-round.

Become a lifeguard and work at the City pools!

The City of Sunnyvale hires lifeguards and swim instructors on a seasonal basis to staff the city pools. Lifeguard and swim instructor candidates must be at least 16 years of age by the date of hire, and must possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR certification. Please visit the City of Sunnyvale’s jobsite in early March of each year in order to apply for a position.

Columbia Park Pool

Columbia Park Pool, built in 1972, is located at 730 Morse Ave. behind the Columbia Neighborhood Center and next to Columbia Middle School. This 110,000 gallon pool measures 25 yards by 44 feet, and opens for the summer season in late June, with swim lessons and recreation swim running through mid-August. Registration for summer swimming lessons will take place online, via phone, fax, or walk-in at the Sunnyvale Community Center from April 5-June 15, 2011. Starting June 20, 2011, registration for summer swim lessons will take place at Columbia Park Pool during lesson hours.

Lakewood Park Pool

Lakewood Park Power Outage

Unfortunately, there is an electrical power outage at Lakewood Park affecting the building, court, pool, field and pathway lighting systems. We are working with PG&E to resolve the problem and regular updates will be posted here and posted at the Park. We regret any inconvenience that is caused by this unexpected problem. (05/23/11)

Peterson Middle School Pool

Peterson Middle School Pool is located at 1380 Rosalia Ave. in Sunnyvale, at Peterson Middle School. This complex features two pools. The shallow pool measures 25 yards by 44 feet, and varies in depth from 3.5’ to 5’. The diving well extends to a depth of 12 feet, and has 2 diving boards for diving practice. This facility opens for the summer season in late June, with swim lessons and recreation swim running through mid-August. Washington Park/Swim Center

Washington Park Pool, constructed in 1955, is located at 255 S. Pastoria Ave. This 210,000 gallon pool measures 100’ by 40’ at the deep end, and opens up to 80’ at the shallow end of the pool, forming a trapezoidal shape. Pool depth ranges from 2.5’ to 12’. Washington Park Pool opens for limited swim lesson and water exercise usage in April of each year. The summer season begins in late June, with swim lessons and recreation swim running through mid-August, and the Fall program lasts through the end of September, focusing again on swim lessons and water exercise. Sunnyvale Swim Complex at Fremont High School

The Sunnyvale Swim Complex at Fremont High School is a joint use facility between the City of Sunnyvale and the Fremont High School District, and features an Olympic size pool (50 meters by 25 yards). The facility also includes a pool house w/ locker rooms, a training room for community classes, shaded viewing area, and numerous other amenities.
