The Improv

The historic Improv evolved from humble beginnings during the 60s in New York. The now famous red brick wall associated with the club, emerged as a result of demolishing the interior décor. Not having the knowledge or financial capability to redecorate, the club owner, Budd Friedman, left the interior bare.

The club was originally established as a place for Broadway performers to meet and unwind following live performances. However, soon young comedians appeared on the stage to obtain feedback for stand-up routines. Comics rapidly replaced singers and the legend of the Improv was born.

The popularity of stand-up comedy persuaded Mr. Friedman to develop clubs in the West. Many famous celebrities got their start as employees of an Improv club. Daniel Baldwin and Jim Carrey were once door managers and Debra Winger was a waitress.

Today the internationally known Improv incorporates an intimate dining experience along with the opportunity to attend a live comedic performance. The club in San Jose provides beverages and meals before both shows. The list of celebrity comedians who have appeared at the Improv include Damon Wayans, Jon Lovitz and Rob Schneider. The club also hosts the talents of national comedians frequently seen on various television comedy shows.
